Key Findings

August 2024 Pulse Results

August Question: What is the biggest impediment for your organization's continued adoption of AI?

The Retail AI Council surveyed key industry leaders to identify the most pressing challenges in AI implementation. The findings offer valuable insights into the obstacles organizations face and provide a roadmap for those looking to navigate AI adoption successfully.

Data Quality and Integration (26%): A significant portion of respondents identified data quality and integration as the primary challenge. This reinforces the critical role that clean, reliable data plays in AI success. For retailers and businesses, it’s clear that a strong data foundation is essential for AI systems to operate effectively, making data integrity and integration a top priority in any AI strategy.

Talent and Expertise (22%): The second most cited challenge was a shortage of talent and expertise. AI requires specialized skills, and this talent gap is a major barrier for many organizations. The Council emphasizes the need for ongoing investment in talent acquisition, development, and upskilling to meet the growing demand for AI expertise.

Cost and ROI (18%): Cost concerns and uncertainty around return on investment were also prominent. The Council encourages businesses to carefully consider the financial implications of AI adoption and to approach projects with a long-term perspective. Establishing clear metrics for success and aligning AI initiatives with overall business goals will be key to realizing the full potential of AI.

Ethical and Regulatory Concerns (10%): With increasing scrutiny on AI ethics and regulations, 10% of respondents voiced concerns in this area. The Retail AI Council advises organizations to prioritize the development of responsible AI frameworks that comply with ethical standards and emerging regulations. This focus will not only build trust but also safeguard against potential risks.

Scalability & Change Management (12%): Challenges around scalability and managing organizational change were noted by 6% of respondents each. These findings highlight the complexity of expanding AI solutions across the business and the importance of managing internal shifts in processes and culture. The Council encourages companies to prepare for these transitions with clear plans and dedicated change management initiatives.

Customer Acceptance (4%): Interestingly, customer acceptance of AI was less of a concern, suggesting that external audiences are more receptive to AI innovations than some may anticipate. Retailers can focus more on overcoming internal barriers without significant worries about customer pushback.

Other (8%): The remaining 8% of respondents indicated other challenges, which may be unique to their specific organizational context. This underscores that each AI journey is distinct and may present unforeseen obstacles.

What is the biggest impediment for your organization's continued adoption of AI?

The August AI Pulse data highlights that data quality and integration are the most significant barriers to AI adoption. Organizations must also address talent shortages and cost concerns. Larger companies, leading in AI innovation, should prioritize strengthening these areas. While ethical, scalability, and customer challenges are secondary, addressing them will be crucial for broader adoption. These findings emphasize the need for collaboration between retailers and industry partners to accelerate AI deployment across enterprises.

July 2024 Pulse Results

July Question: What level best describes your organization's adoption of AI?

The July AI Pulse results provide a deep dive into the current state of AI adoption across the retail industry and its partners, revealing clear distinctions in the levels of AI integration and the influence of company size and leadership roles.

Retailers' AI Adoption: The majority of retailers (35%) report localized AI adoption, where AI is applied in specific areas rather than across the organization. This highlights that many retailers are still taking incremental steps toward broader integration. 24% of retailers are at the strategic integration phase, meaning AI is aligned with long-term business strategies, yet 18% report no formal approach, indicating a lack of structured AI initiatives. The fact that only 12% are in initial experimentation and 12% in transformative innovation reflects a cautious approach to AI, with retailers testing its potential but not yet fully capitalizing on it. Most notably, none have reached enterprise-wide deployment, underscoring that large-scale, integrated AI adoption remains a future goal rather than a present reality.

Industry Partners’ AI Maturity: In contrast, industry partners appear more advanced, with 31% reporting transformative innovation, suggesting they are leveraging AI for significant impact across their businesses. 27% remain at localized adoption, and 22% have reached strategic integration, closely mirroring the retail landscape but with a more forward-leaning approach. 5% of industry partners have achieved enterprise-wide AI deployment, a milestone that retailers have yet to reach. This indicates that while some partners are pushing AI’s boundaries, others (10% in initial experimentation and 5% with no formal approach) are still navigating early stages of adoption.

Company Size and AI Adoption: When we look at company size, nearly 49% of the Council’s members generate over $1 billion in revenue, and another 29% fall between $500 million and $1 billion. This concentration of large enterprises suggests that larger companies are driving much of the AI experimentation and innovation. Their scale likely gives them the resources to experiment with AI on a localized basis before moving toward strategic integration. Companies with smaller revenue bases (under $500 million) may have fewer resources and are slower to advance beyond initial experimentation or localized use cases.

Leadership’s Role in AI Strategy: The data also reflects the critical role of leadership in driving AI adoption. With 28% of respondents holding VP-level roles and 22% representing C-level or director positions, the majority of decision-makers influencing AI adoption are at the top levels of management. This senior-level focus suggests that AI adoption is seen as a strategic initiative rather than a tactical one. Additionally, with 17% in manager roles, there’s a growing base of operational leaders pushing AI forward, likely responsible for experimentation and localized adoption. The fact that leadership is so engaged highlights the growing recognition of AI’s potential impact at an organizational level.

Conclusion: Overall, the AI Pulse data reveals that while many retailers are still in the early stages of AI adoption, industry partners are leading the way with more advanced deployments. Larger companies with significant revenue are driving much of the AI innovation, and leadership engagement at the VP and C-suite level is instrumental in moving AI initiatives forward. The gap between industry partners and retailers presents an opportunity for deeper collaboration, where partners can share their advanced insights and help retailers accelerate their AI journey toward enterprise-wide deployment.
